Agritechnica 2011
Letzte Woche schloss die Agritechnica 2011 – die weltbedeutendste Messe am Agrarsektor mit einem Aussteller- und Besucherrekord ihre Tore.
Auch wir konnten uns über einen noch nicht dagewesenen Fachbesucher Zuspruch erfreuen. Höchstes Interesse galt dem neuen Luftbildmaterial von Microsoft – Bing Maps in 30 cm Auflösung verfügbar für Europa/West und USA ab Mitte 2012 -, unseren Planungswerkzeugen für die Land- und Forstwirtschaft - die durch die Verfügbarkeit dieser Bilder erst so richtig zum Einsatz kommen können – und dem brandneuen NPK-Sensor, der in der westlichen Welt erstmalig vorgestellt wurde.
WANA Region
On 7th and 8th of June 2011, a group of experts met in Amman-Jordan to find out best GIS based applications to boost agricultural development in WANA region. The meeting was arranged by AARINENA, the association of Agricultural research institutions in the Near East and North Africa. It is the mission of AARINENA to contribute to the enhancement of agricultural and rural development in the WANA Region, and PROGIS was invited as well known expert for practical and sustainable solutions to take part.
(Joint Research Centre, DG Environment, Eurostat). The key outcome of the conference: Soils are one of the most important basic needs for our survival. Without soils no food and bad and wrong cultivation methods lead to much higher natural risks. Destroyed soils need lots of input of resources, money and time to repair them, that means it is better to prevent.
PROGIS DokuPlant and its soil manager is one of the many tools for the future optimized use and control of soils and the very close related water. A few minutes of this seminar can be seen in this (pls. download here ) 10 minutes lasting film where there is included also a scene of the presentation of our CEO DI Mayer.
AGRO-ICT-Backbone für Afrika
Workshop in Washington
Am 28.3.2011 findet in Washington auf unsere Initiative hin ein Workshop zum Thema „Aufbau der Landwirtschaft in Afrika“ stattfindet. Dieser Workshop hat zum Ziel, die Vertreter vieler Einzelinitiativen auf einen Tisch zu holen und Wege für Kooperationen zur Erreichung gleicher Ziele zu finden. Bei diesem Workshop wird unter dem Programmpunkt Privatsektor, die Kooperation Microsoft mit PROGIS und Wetterdatenintegration und der gemeinsame Auftritt in Agrarprojekten am Programm. Das gemeinsame Africa Sub-Sahara ICT-backbone Modell bestehend aus Bing - Karten mit 50 cm Auflösung für landwirtschaftliche Flächen (kulturfähiges Land, Dauerkulturen, 50% Weideland) und mit 1-2m Auflösung für die restlichen Weideflächen, Wälder und andere ländliche Nutzflächen + PROGIS ICT-Technologie + Wetterdatenintegration + Beratung, wird dort erstmalig vorgestellt kann mit starken Partnern und der Unterstützung von Donor-Organisation natürlich auch in jeder anderen Region dieser Welt umgesetzt werden

President Obama signed food safety bill.
The new law titled Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA):
--Allows the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) to order a recall of tainted food. Currently it can only negotiate with businesses for voluntary recalls.
--Require the agency to develop new safety regulations for producers of the highest-risk fruits and vegetables.
--Increase inspections of domestic and foreign food facilities;
--Require farms and processors to keep records to help the government trace recalled foods.
Under the new law -- among other new and expanded abilities -- the FDA will be allowed to employ food recalls, access records at both farms and processing centers, and set quality standards for imported produce.
The food safety bill will allow the FDA to hire some 18,000 new inspectors and more frequent inspections are promised for the agriculture sector

The government of the Republic of Chad celebrates it’s 50th anniversary and invites Mr. Walter Mayer as expert for agri technology and agri research to take part. Next to the ceremony, 3 plenary sessions and 3 workshops will shape the program of the investment/economic forum where experienced professionals will share their experiences in regard to food security, trade of food, financing and investing, agricultural development, private sector contribution, challenges related to water and modernization of agriculture in Chad
CLOUD COMPUTING ON THE ADVANCE
USDA – The United States Department of Agriculture is moving its e-mail, document sharing and other collaboration tools to Microsoft’s cloud infrastructure.
With this step, USDA is the first cabinet-level federal agency embracing the cloud.
“This is really about increasing collaboration and communications across the breadth of 120,000 users in 5,000 offices across the country and 100 countries around the globe to better deliver on the USDA’s mission,” said Chris Smith, chief information officer for the United States Department of Agriculture.
